Social-Communication Skills Development for Primary School Children (Ages 6-11) with Autism
Spectrum Disorder

Group Aim:
To support the development of social and communication skills in order to help children build and
maintain relationships and integrate more successfully into school life and peer communities in a
safe, personal setting.

Skills to be developed:

  • Recognising and expressing emotions
  • Understanding social rules
  • Maintaining relationships, cooperation, and problem-solving
  • Self-esteem, self-protection, and assertiveness
  • Using verbal and non-verbal communication tools
  • Managing anxiety
  • Developing mentalisation skills (understanding the thoughts and feelings of others)

Methods:

  • Cognitive-behavioural elements (e.g. reinforcement, reward systems)
  • Autism-specific tools (e.g. visual supports, social stories)
  • Social learning and modelling
  • Role play and situational practice
  • Creative, hands-on activities
  • Cooperative games

Participation in the group requires an initial parent consultation. If necessary, an individual

with the group leader.
Regular parent consultations are also part of the programme to monitor the child’s development,
share insights, and support ongoing collaboration.

Recommended age group: 6-11 years old (primary school students)
