Social-Communication Skills Development for Primary School Children (Ages 6-11) with Autism
Spectrum Disorder
Group Aim:
To support the development of social and communication skills in order to help children build and
maintain relationships and integrate more successfully into school life and peer communities in a
safe, personal setting.
Skills to be developed:
- Recognising and expressing emotions
- Understanding social rules
- Maintaining relationships, cooperation, and problem-solving
- Self-esteem, self-protection, and assertiveness
- Using verbal and non-verbal communication tools
- Managing anxiety
- Developing mentalisation skills (understanding the thoughts and feelings of others)
Methods:
- Cognitive-behavioural elements (e.g. reinforcement, reward systems)
- Autism-specific tools (e.g. visual supports, social stories)
- Social learning and modelling
- Role play and situational practice
- Creative, hands-on activities
- Cooperative games
Participation in the group requires an initial parent consultation. If necessary, an individual
assessment is conducted before group placement, followed by 3–4 introductory one-on-one sessions
with the group leader.
Regular parent consultations are also part of the programme to monitor the child’s development,
share insights, and support ongoing collaboration.
Recommended age group: 6-11 years old (primary school students)
